چکیده

A new time-series analysis of profile changes in the photospheric He I λ4713 spectral line from data taken during 5 days in 1989 at the Calar Alto and Kitt Peak observatories has provided evidence for the presence of a non-radial prograde p-mode in the O 7.5 giant ξ Per (` = 3, P = 3.5) and probably two such modes in the O6 supergiant λ Cep (` = 3, P = 12.3 h and ` = 5, P = 6.6 h). The corotating pulsation periods are in both cases much shorter than the estimated stellar rotation period. Modeling the observed amplitude of the line-profile changes (assuming |m| = `) yields a velocity amplitude of approximately 5 km s−1 of the pulsation in ξ Per and 6 km s−1 in λ Cep. Any such a pulsation by itself is unlikely to be the cause of the well-known cyclical wind variability in these stars because the pulsation period is too short, but the cumulative action of multiple modes could cause such an effect. Weak magnetic fields anchored at the surface remain the strongest candidate for the origin of wind variability.

Discovery of magnetic fields in the β Cephei star ξ 1 CMa and in several Slowly Pulsating B stars ⋆

We present the results of a magnetic survey of a sample of eight β Cephei stars and 26 Slowly Pulsating B stars with FORS1 at the VLT. A weak mean longitudinal magnetic field of the order of a few hundred Gauss is detected in the β Cephei star ξ CMa and in 13 SPB stars. The star ξ CMa becomes the third magnetic star among the β Cephei stars. Before our study, the star ζ Cas was the only known m...

Observations of Pulsating Stars

Pulsations discussed will begin at the “top” of the instability strip with pulsating red giants and Miras, which are evolved stars nearing their own demise. The next discussed will be the Cepheids, both the “Classical” ones as well as the W Virginis (Population II stars). While moving down the instability strip of the HR Diagram, the next major type of variable (pulsating) star are the RR Lyrae...

A period analysis of the optical line variability of β Cephei: evidence for multi-mode pulsation and rotational modulation

We investigate the optical line-profile variability of the prototype of the β Cephei stars. From more than 600 spectra, with a typical signal to noise ratio of over 200 and high spectral resolution, we deduce that the variations show periodicity with at least five different frequencies. We find variability at the previously known frequencies f1=5.25 cycles/day (radial pulsation) and f2=5.38 c/d...

Amplitude Saturation in β Cephei Models

Although the driving mechanism acting in β Cephei pulsators is well known (e.g. Dziembowski & Pamyatnykh 1993), problems concerning identification of amplitude limitation mechanism and non-uniform filling of the theoretical instability strip, remain to be solved. In the present analysis, these problems are addressed by non-linear modelling of radial pulsations of these stars. In this approach r...

Instability strips of SPB and β Cephei stars: the effect of the updated OP opacities and of the metal mixture

The discovery of β Cephei stars in low metallicity environments, as well as the difficulty in theoretically explaining the excitation of the pulsation modes observed in some β Cephei and hybrid SPB-β Cephei pulsators, suggest that the “iron opacity bump” provided by stellar models could be underestimated. We analyze the effect of uncertainties in the opacity computations and in the solar metal ...
